Blinds, Shades, Or Shutters  Which Are Best For My Apartment?

Just as apartments are individual to their owner, they have individual climate needs. They offer a unique challenge in insulation, since apartments may be smaller, draftier, or higher up and more exposed to the elements and light changes than most houses. Similarly, the cardinal direction they face may become an issue, since homes facing certain directions gain and lose heat at different times of the day. Windows are an important source of insulation, so it is vital that residents know what window treatments are best for their particular home â or even for a particular room.

Blinds, one traditional option for window insulation, offer many different options. They are generally a fairly economical choice, depending on the quality and material that you purchase. They are effective at shielding windows and blocking heat transferal, creating a seal around the window to trap air. Additionally, blinds are very helpful in rooms that need gradual light adjustment, rather than total blackout or exposure. They also offer a great amount of privacy for residents without impairing visibility and while continuing to allow light to filter in.

Shades, another option, offer some other advantages and disadvantages. Like blinds, they are often used to adjust light levels rather than completely block light, and can be used to change the color or feel of light while minimizing its harshness â no more blinding rays in your eyes while you sit at the kitchen table. However, they probably are not as effective as blinds at managing light levels or providing privacy to residents. They are, however, fairly efficient at insulating windows and blocking heat transfer, and are often an economical option for those who are looking to save money on heating and cooling bills without making a huge investment.

Shutters are a significantly more permanent installation in a home and are considered a lasting and valuable fixture. Interior shutters are usually extremely durable, sometimes even lasting several decades. These window treatments are very effective insulators and energy-savers, and are capable of saving residents a significant amount of money on their utilities bills. They may be pricier than some other window treatment options and take some more time to install, but they usually prove themselves worth the time and money. Like blinds, they offer opportunities for light adjustment and privacy.

It is worth noting each of these window treatments is durable and requires little maintenance, since they are interior and wonât be exposed to outdoor damage such as rain. With time, they may show sun exposure; in fact, some shades are even equipped with UV-blocking capabilities that lessen sun exposure and heat transfer in your home, which is good for both you and your furniture. There are certainly strengths to each window treatment that go beyond light management and insulation ability, including certain aesthetic qualities such as lengthening or brightening a room. These are all aspects to consider, but one thing is certain: with the right window treatment, you can make your home both more beautiful and more energy-efficient. read more shutter design tips light spread blog

How I Enjoy My Added Privacy With Interior Window Shutters

Living right by the sidewalk was never a major issue for me until I was sitting at home one day and noticed how many people start to look in the window while they walk by. This led me to think about how many people are actually looking in the window and starting to poke fun at me because of what I am doing. Then I started to think about what kind of invasion of privacy this was for me. To stop this I decided to install interior window shutters and wanted to share with everyone my choice of doing this installation.

When I first installed these the main difference that I noticed was they still had the light coming into the room, through the slits. So it was slightly filtered light, but it was still coming into the home. However, the next thing I noticed was the amount of people who were able to see into my home now was zero. When I saw this I realized just how much I loved the shutters because I was finally able to get the quiet that I wanted to have and not have to be concerned about people looking in on me all the time.

Something else that I really enjoy with this type of shutter in addition to the privacy is the fact that they are stylish. At first, I had my doubts if they would be stylish at all. However, I quickly saw that this was a great way for me to add in my privacy and not lose any of the great looks I wanted to have in my home. So this is something I really liked to have because I love being on the cutting edge of all the latest trends for the home.

Living right on the sidewalk has some advantages. At the same time, though, it has quite a few drawbacks as well. The primary drawback that I have is the fact that everyone could see right into my kitchen when I was trying to sit and read the paper and make my meals. Normally I would not care, but when I have seen people staring it was really upsetting to me. This is when I decided to add some privacy to my home with interior window shutters. By using these shutters, I was finally able to get some privacy and know that my home would feel like my own and not like a fish bowl.

Thank you for your time and reading my thoughts I hope you enjoyed this so I thought it would be cool to leave you with this to check out!.

Why Plantation Shutters From Cultivated Sources Are The Best Way To Get Shutters

Putting shutters on a home is a great way to increase the energy efficiency of a home, but it is also a great way to add a specific type of flair to the home. However, for some people they are not sure where they should be getting the shutters from because they have not really had to shop for them before. This is when people should know more about why the plantation shutters (go here www.utexas-edu.com) that come from cultivated sources are the best ones to get the shutters they need to have for their home.

Cultivated sources tend to raise the trees in a way that is safe for the trees, but also good for the environment. Since they are raising the trees in this manner people do not have to be concerned about the home having shutters that are full of bugs or even worse have shutters that are going to have rot in them. Not only that since the trees are cultivated people will know where the wood is coming from and in most cases be able to check out the companies website that is raising the trees to see if they are being raised in a way they like to see or not.

Planting schedules are something else people will enjoy when they are using wood from a cultivated source. Sometimes people do not think about this aspect, but with a cultivated source they tend to rotate the planting schedules around. This way they are able to get the trees and know it is going to be done on a timed basis. For example, a tree farm is not a fast money making operation. In fact, with most of the trees people are using for the shutters it is going to be twenty to forty years old. So this means people will have a schedule they will want to follow closely and carefully.

Properly cultivated sources will allow the company who is producing the shutters to come out and select the wood they want to use. This in turn makes it easier for the shutter companies to select only the trees they are wanting to use, but also use the wood they know is going to work to help them in making the shutters. So this is something else people will enjoy when they are using the cultivated sources for the shutters.

Having a chance to get the best wood shutters on the market is always a good thing, but for some people it is going to involve knowing more about why they should be using the cultivated sources for the production of the wood shutters. By knowing about this it is going to be very easy for people to find the right shutters and know they are going to add in a great feature to their home, but also be able to have a feature that is going to keep the planet safe and sound. Without this, people may select the wrong shutter for their home.

4 Organizers You May Need For Your Closet

Trying to keep your closet in order can be quite frustrating, which is why buying an organizer should be at the very top of your to-do list. There are many different types available, which means that you will really have to shop around. In case you need a little help, here are four types of organizers you may want to consider.

Plastic Bins

These can be found all over the place, and they come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. While it used to be customary to store things in shoe boxes, this is a better way to do the same thing. These are particularly useful because they can prevent water and smoke damage when sealed tightly.

Hanging Bags

You have probably seen shoe racks and suit carriers that are similar to the hanging bags referred to here. These are soft, portable bags that hang in the closet and act as a storage space. Many of them are fitted with shelves, drawers and pockets. This means that you have plenty of places to put all of the things that you want out of sight.

Custom Organizers

Whether you believe it or not, there are companies out there that allow people to design their own organizers. All you have to do is let them know what your needs are and provide them with a few measurements. Once you receive the organizer, it is your responsibility to install it on your own. The great thing about this is the fact that it is pretty simple to do, which means that you will not have to hire a pro to help you. If you do want to hire a pro, contact Closet Wizards.

Extra Shelves

If you believe that your closet would benefit from having a few more shelves put in there, you should definitely consider this easy DIY project. You can walk into any home goods store and find various shelf units that have easy to follow instructions. You will be able to add much-needed room in your closet and they are usually fairly inexpensive.

While you have probably complained numerous times about the lack of space in your closet, you have probably figured there was nothing that could be done about it, which is absolutely incorrect. If you are seeking ways to organize your closet and keep everything in manageable order, you should try one or more of the organizer types mentioned here.

New Window Shutters Are The Best Choice I Ever Made For My Home

When we first bought our home, it was because I loved the location and the views we had from the living room among other things. However, there were a few issues that I knew we would have to deal with. The original owner of the house used thick drapes in most rooms to block out the sunlight, along with the gorgeous mountain scenery! Although they took those unsightly drapes with them, I did not want to leave the windows bare.

I started looking around online to see what my options were for replacing them. There were several things on my list of considerations, including that I wanted to be able to check out the scenery whenever I wanted to. However, this did not mean that I wanted to have bare windows and summer heat waving in all of the time.

Although I could have used the same style drapes the previous owner did, these do not match my personality nor the look I wanted to create inside of my new home. Plastic blinds were not in line with the look I wanted to create either, and I continued to search for the best window treatments for the house.

It was important to me that they were both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Fortunately, one of my husband's co-workers suggested plantation shutters and I fell in love with them! These were definitely one of the best choices we made in our redecorating efforts for the new house. There are several reasons that I really like them, and I simply cannot imagine a better choice for our home!

First of all, these coverings are gorgeous. We had them custom designed and the wood matches the trim in each room of the house, bringing the look together well. Not only that, the contractor did a great job of making sure that they fit well and tie together each room and the home overall.

The shutters do a fantastic job of keeping the sunlight out when closed. I don't have to worry about the UV rays damaging the carpet and furnishings due to prolonged exposure. This is a big problem for people who use light curtains and similar window treatments.

However, when I am ready to open the view to the world, they are super easy and simple to open up. In the early morning, I love to sip on my coffee and wake up while watching the sun rise over the mountains and hills through the windows in our breakfast nook.

During the winter time, they help to control the temperature so that we do not have to spend as much on our heating costs as we would otherwise. This is just one more benefit to the shutters I already adore.

I am so glad that my husband and I chose to install plantation shutters throughout our new home. They are attractive and functional, which is a winning combination in my book!

How To Get Great Traditional Shutters On A Tight Budget

Traditional shutters make great window decorations, and can take a simple home and turn it into somewhere luxurious looking, comfortable and stylish, but there's one downside to them compared to other window treatments - they can be a little expensive to install.

Once you buy traditional shutters, you can be confident that they will last a lifetime; they're easy to clean, require minimal maintenance, and can be repainted to change their look should you ever want to renovate the room they're in - but how can you cut down the cost of installing them in the first place? Here are a few ideas.

Build Your Own

If you're a DIY enthusiast, why not try building your own shutters? It doesn't have to be a massive, complicated undertaking. You can purchase softwood quite easily, cut it down to size, nail it together and paint it, and the total cost would be the materials plus a weekend of your time. For realtively simple, pannelled shutters, it wouldn't be a big job. Slatted shutters are a little harder to work with, and take more skill, but it could still be a fun project.

Buy from a Reclaimer

If you live in a period property, or you just want to have an authentic looking set of traditional shutters, then why waste money on 'brand new' ones when you can purchase some originals from an architectural reclaimer? Shutters that are in perfect condition could be expensive, but you can often get the original wood, in need of repair and restoration, quite cheaply, and do it up yourself with a little time and elbow grease.

Engineered Wood or Veneered Shutters

Engineered wood consists of a softwood core and a layer of the more expensive hardwood. Veneered wood is similar, but you're getting a very thin outer layer, rather than a 'sandwich'.

Engineered wood is:

Quite durable Cheaper than hardwood Usually quite resistant to damp and warping A little harder to repair and work with than hardwood, which can be a problem for bigger pieces, but should be fine for shutters.

Veneered wood is even cheaper still, but is only suitable for interior shutters - the veneer is fragile and would crack or peel if it was exposed to the elements. However, for people who are looking to get traditional shutters for their interior, and who care more about the look than they do about durability (after all, interior shutters are highly unlikely to get damaged), softwood with a veneer is a perfectly good option.

If you install the shutters yourself instead of paying someone else, you can save a lot of money that way too. The amount of work required to install shutters is minimal - but you will need to make sure that you mount enough hinges to keep the shutter secure - if you use original hardwood, remember that it can be far heavier than it looks, so make sure that the hinges can take the weight.
